Key takeaway: Ensure you have the latest Hulu app version. Also, connect your iPhone or Android to the same network as the Chromecast. If the cast icon is missing, first force close the Hulu app. Then, restart your mobile device.
The Hulu cast button often goes missing on iPhone and Android. I’ve dealt with this problem many times before so here are some of the things you can do right now.
Make sure Hulu is playing a show or movie
To see the Hulu cast icon on the screen, you need to start watching something. Try playing something on the Hulu app first.
If it doesn’t work initially, return to the previous screen. Alternatively, open a different app. After that, go back to Hulu, and the cast button should show up in the top-right corner.
Restart your mobile device
If the cast icon doesn’t appear in the Hulu app on iPhone or Android, it often means the mobile device can’t detect the Chromecast on the network.
Start by restarting your phone. It might seem like a simple fix, but rebooting the phone often solves the problem. In my experience, it works about 95 percent of the time.
The Hulu cast icon usually shows up after the restart.
Reboot your Chromecast device
If restarting your phone doesn’t solve the issue, then reboot your Chromecast device. You can do this by rebooting from the power source or using the Google Home app.
To reboot your Chromecast directly from the power source, disconnect the power cable from the Chromecast device and leave it unplugged for one minute. Plug the power cable back in.
Another way to reboot is through the Google Home app: open the app, tap on the device’s tile, then in the top right corner, select Settings > More settings > Reboot.
For TVs with built-in Chromecast, unplug the power cable to reboot. Leave the TV unplugged for at least one minute, then insert the cable back into the power source.
According to Google, rebooting your Chromecast is a great way to fix several issues. Many people have solved the “Hulu cast button missing” problem just by rebooting their Chromecast.
Use one Wi-Fi network
The Hulu cast icon won’t show if your device is on a mobile network. Your mobile device and Chromecast must be on the same Wi-Fi to cast Hulu. If not, the cast button won’t appear. Make sure both your phone or tablet and Chromecast are connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Connect all devices to the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet network. It may sound basic, but always ensure all devices share the same network.
Modern routers offer both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. So, you might see similar Wi-Fi names like “Amanda” and “Amanda_5G”. I usually turn my Wi-Fi off and then on, choosing the 2.4 GHz network. Remember, the first-gen Chromecast only works on 2.4 GHz.
If you no longer see the cast icon in your Hulu app after replacing your router, your mobile device and TV might be on different networks.
Did you keep the same SSID and password when you replaced your router, or create a new login? Ensure you connect to the correct Chromecast’s SSID.
Use the latest version of Hulu
To cast from your phone, use the latest Hulu app version. With an older Hulu version, the cast button won’t appear. Regularly check Google Play or Apple App Store for Hulu updates.
Do you have the Amazon Appstore on your device? If yes, I suggest using the Hulu version from Google Play or Apple App Store.
Once, the Amazon Appstore tried to update my Hulu app, which I had originally downloaded from Google Play. The Amazon Appstore gave me a Hulu version without Chromecast support.
Force close the Hulu app
If the Hulu cast icon doesn’t show, open Hulu on a different phone with the same account. This helps check if it’s a device-specific issue.
To test casting, try the YouTube app; it’s often reliable.
Play content and see if the cast button appears. If other apps show the cast icon, close Hulu on your phone and try casting again. Often, reopening Hulu fixes the issue.
Log out from the Hulu app
If the Hulu cast button is still missing, first log out from Hulu. Then, disconnect and reconnect to Wi-Fi. After that, log back into Hulu.
